Pushing Positions
Did you know that when providers ask that you push on your back it’s because it’s easier for them (and what they are used to), not easier for you? On your back you are more likely to tear, have a prolonged pushing phase, and assisted delivery (vacuum and forceps).
Some of the best positions to push in are: all fours, side lying (great if you have an epidural), squatting (with support), or side lunging. These are great because gravity is used to your advantage!
And, yes, you can decline a position change being suggested by your doctor or nurse. You are in charge.
