Benefits of Breastfeeding
Breastmilk offers immune protection for babies against infections, and your breasts read baby’s saliva to create antibodies and tailor milk to their nutritional needs.
-
Your milk is designed for your baby's digestive system, so you will likely see less digestive issues in your baby.
-
Breastfeeding your baby reduces the risk of SIDS by 50%, and lowers the risk of type 1 and 2 diabetes.
-
Fewer breastfed babies develop childhood cancers, allergies, eczema, and asthma.
-
Teens and adults who were breastfed as infants are less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and pre- and postmenopausal breast cancers.
-
Several studies show a significant “brain boost” in breastfed babies- meaning breastfed babies are likely to have a higher IQ.
-
Sucking helps build a stronger jaw, gums and palate, all of which helps ensure optimum oral development and they will potentially have fewer cavities.
-
Because the flavor of your milk changes based on what you eat, you are more likely to have an adventurous eater if you breastfeed.
-
Moms who breastfeed are less likely to develop postpartum depression.
-
Each time you breastfeed your baby, you are both releasing oxytocin (the love hormone) which encourages bonding and physical and emotional connection.
-
Breastfeeding promotes postpartum recovery by encouraging your uterus to shrink down to its original size.
-
Breastfeeding may reduce the mothers risk for breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers later in life.
-
The World Health Organization recommends that babies are breastfed for at least two years. Natural weaning typically occurs between two and four years of age.
I love learning about the amazing things our bodies can do. I also recognize that some choose not to breastfeed for many reasons- I’m all about moms doing what feels right for them, all the love you all no matter what you choose! If you are having trouble breastfeeding in any way and need support I would definitely suggest seeing a lactation consultant to help you out! I know some great ones so let me know if you need help finding someone 😊
